Since engaging our Music Therapist Kerryn last year the program is coming along in leaps and bounds!
iPod Therapy
Personalised iPod therapy has been very successful for our residents living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. The iPods have helped greatly with some of our most vulnerable residents who are withdrawn, anxious or aggressive, allowing the music to calm and comfort the resident and has had some of our non-verbal residents singing along to their favourite tunes.
Melodies and Memories
Music and Melodies are all about sharing our favourite songs in a group and encouraging conversations about memories the music envokes.
This kind of therapy encourages meaningful communication between residents who often share similar memories about the music we are singing along to. It is a chance for our residents to connect with one another and it’s always wonderful to hear and share individual experiences through music.
Live Performances
Live performances are a favourite part of our residents fortnightly programme. We have already welcomed a number of various artists who cover a range of genres including classical, theatre, sing alongs and old time favourites.
Residents from across our homes are invited to attend and they are proving to be a great way to connect our residents with a wide range of live music and each other.
Concerts and Outings
‘Morning Melodies’ are a favourite part of our residents lifestyle calendar, taking our residents in our mini bus to the Caulfield R.S.L where a special guest artist plays favourite tunes from various era’s or artists.
We are also partnering with ANAM (Australian National Academy of Music) where our residents are invited to enjoy multiple recitals from our most prestigious classically trained students and graduates in Australia.
Palliative Music Therapy
As part of our palliative care plan, we are able to offer live and relaxing performances featuring guitar or ukulele with quiet favourites as residents families and friends gather to farewell their loved ones. This is a welcome reprieve for the loved ones of our residents as they are often unsure of what to say or do during palliative care. Music provides comfort and reassurance during these difficult times.
